Schefflera arboricola formerly Heptapleurum arboricola (parasol plant or umbrella plant) is a branching, tree-like plant with umbrella-like leaves.   There are about 7 to 10 leaflets on each leaf stalk.   The most common varieties have leaves splashed with gold.

This plant will grow well in almost any light condition but they grow best in full sun.

Like many houseplants, Schefflera arboricola does not like to sit in overly wet soil.   When you water this plant, make sure that it has excellent drainage and that the soil is almost completely dry.   You do not need to worry much about under watering this plant.   It is a very drought tolerant plant and makes an excellent houseplant for someone who may need a plant that requires less care.

Propagating this plant is best done by either cuttings or layering.   If you wish to use the cutting method, simply cut off any section of the stem of the plant with a sharp knife.   If desired, you can dip the cut end in rooting hormone.   Once you have the cutting, put in good potting soil and place in an area with high humidity and indirect light until roots develop.   A plastic bag covering the pot and cutting will help to keep the humidity high.

Layering is another option.   Take a branch on the plant and remove a thin section of the outer covering of the stem.   Without breaking the stem off from the parent plant, bury the wounded part of the stem under the soil.   Eventually, roots will grow there.   Once roots have grown, you can separate the new plant from the parent plant.
