polka dot plantHypoestes sanguinolenta (polka dot plant) is a like-it or hate-it plant. The soft, rounded leaves are blotched and freckled with many pink or sometimes white spots.

Its flowers are insignificant, which is not a problem as the brilliantly colored leaves more than make up for a flower.

Hypoestes sanguinolenta likes some sun and sun will increase its variegation but it can tolerate lower levels of light. In tropical climates, it can be grown outdoors, but must be grown in a shady location and full outdoor sun will kill it.

These plants prefer a moist, humid environment and slightly acidic soil.

The older the plant gets, the more leggy it tends to become. It is recommended that you prune the plant regularly to prevent it from becoming too leggy.

They are often planted in bottle gardens but are not ideal for this, because they will outgrow their space rapidly.

These plants are normally grown from seed or propagated through cuttings.
