I'm married to a professional gardener, and the number one tool in his arsenal is pure and simple mulch. At least, it should be pure and simple. Too many people, however, use it incorrectly or overlook it entirely.

There are so many benefits to using mulch. In fact, if you choose correctly, it can conserve moisture, suppress weeds, moderates soil temperature, and even improves soil structure over time. Choose incorrectly, though, and you're prone to falling foul of at least one major mulching mistake. At least.

And that's where things get complicated, as there are so many different mulches available, and they all promise different things. So, are wood chips, straw, compost, bark, or something else entirely best for your garden?

Before you reach for the bag on the shelf, remember that mulch isn’t one-size-fits-all. The needs of a flower bed are very different from those of a vegetable patch or a newly planted tree. Some mulches decompose quickly and enrich the soil, while others last years, protecting roots without breaking down. And for those focused on sustainability, some materials (like shredded leaves or straw) are infinitely more eco-friendly than synthetic options.

To help you out, we've designed an easy quiz so that you can narrow down the right mulch for your garden. Answer the questions below, and by the end, you’ll know whether your garden calls for organic, inorganic, fast-decomposing, or long-lasting mulch, helping your plants thrive all year round...

So, how did you get on? If you whizzed through this (and loved it), then you might like to find out your houseplant soulmate test or figure out which flower seed is right for you this spring – and have a bash at our extra special hydrangea personality quiz, too. There's even a quiz to help you determine which vegetable you should grow in your garden this year.

Have fun, and be sure to look out for more quizzes and puzzles coming very soon...

She previously served as digital editor at Stylist magazine, and has written extensively for Ideal Home, Woman & Home, Homes & Gardens, and a handful of other titles. Now, though, she is leaning into her passion for plants at Gardening Know How.

In her spare time, Kayleigh loves to spend as much time as possible outdoors – not least of all because it helps her tiny tearaway daughters burn off some much-needed energy – so she can usually be found wandering around one of England's National Trust site, traipsing around the lakes near her village, or making mud pies and homemade potions in the garden.

Married to an RHS-trained gardener with a penchant for rescuing unwanted plants, their 'work in progress' backyard has become something of a plant hospital over time: there's usually a sorry-looking bush or shrub being carefully nursed back to good health somewhere (which is why they're extra proud of the stunning laurel hedge at the front of their home – it was nothing but a sickly yellow sprig until they got their hands on it).

Keen to do her bit for local wildlife, Kayleigh makes a point of filling her borders with pollinator-friendly blooms, native fruiting plants, and wildflowers. Her daughters might be tots still, but she's encouraged them to tend to their own herb garden, too – and there is always a fun family project on the go, whether it's crafting a homemade bee water station, mini pond, hedgehog house, bird feeder, seed bomb, or stumpery.

In addition to her gardening know-how, Kayleigh has also written extensively about pop culture and the arts, and she has a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing.
</dc:description>

Hydrangeas are one of those plants that feel almost mythical, with the kind of beautiful blooms that stop you mid-stride on a summer walk. But for all their soft, romantic charm, they’re also surprisingly practical. Sunny gardens, shady gardens, tiny balconies, sprawling woodland edges… you name it, there’s a hydrangea for it.

But here’s where it gets fun: hydrangeas also have distinct personalities. Some are dramatic show-offs, while others are peaceful old souls. Some are the types of shrubs that prefer structure; others thrive in wild, carefree spaces. And because plant love is personal, why not choose one that feels like you?

Whether you’re a hydrangea novice or already planning next year’s bloom color, this quiz will help you match your personality and your garden with the perfect variety of hydrangea, whether that’s the classic mophead to the elegant oakleaf, the resilient panicle to the quietly magical snowball hydrangea.

Ready? Let’s play matchmaker (but just take care to research your USDA Plant Hardiness Zones before you commit wholeheartedly)…

So, how did you get on?

</dc:description>

What’s your houseplant soulmate? Yes, some might believe in ‘The One’ when it comes to making a love connection, but we’re firmly of the belief that there is a very special indoor plant that matches each and every single person’s personality.

Think about it; some people just get houseplants – their fiddle leaf stands tall and glossy, their spider plant is bursting with babies, and their peace lily never once droops – while others can’t keep a cactus alive for love nor money. Maybe, though, those houseplant mistakes have less to do with your watering schedule, and more to do with your personality?

Just like people, plants have quirks, preferences and needs. Some thrive on routine and gentle care, others prefer to be left to their own devices. A dramatic African violet loves attention, while a stoic snake plant quietly thrives in the corner, unbothered by a bit of neglect.

So, with all of that in mind, which leafy companion best matches your vibe? Take our quiz to find out which houseplant mirrors your personality, and pick up a few care tips along the way. Hey, it’s worth a go if your next green best friend is written in the soil...

So, how did you get on? Having previously served as Editor on Period Living magazine, and worked on Homes & Gardens, Gardening Etc, Real Homes, and Homebuilding & Renovating, she is now focusing on her passion for gardening as Editor in Chief at Gardening Know How.

In her spare time, Melanie loves to explore inspiring gardens and historic properties. Based in England, in a village just outside the Cotswolds, she is spoiled for choice as there are so many beautiful cottage gardens and Arts and Crafts schemes in the area.

As a keen home grower, Melanie has experimented with pretty much every type of vegetable at some point – with mixed results. Often it is the simplest things that elude you, which may explain why she just can't seem to master zucchinis.

Thankfully, she has more luck with flowers, and has spent the last few years evolving her garden – adding beds and borders, and planting up too many containers.

Though she has more roses than anything else (at least 20 varieties), her favorite flowers are dahlias, and she adores the variety of colors and textures they bring to her garden.

In addition to her gardening expertise, Melanie has also studied interior design and has a BA in English and IT.
</dc:description>
