When I moved into my house, I knew I’d have to invest in raised beds if I ever wanted to grow edible plants. My soil was full of weeds, broken glass, trash, and a whole host of other unappetizing and unsafe items. Plus, there is a black walnut tree growing right next door in my neighbor’s yard. So I started looking for the best budget raised beds.

My search brought me to Amazon, of course, where I found a fantastic deal on these FOOWIN Galvanized Raised Garden Beds. I was on the hunt for a high-quality, yet low-cost dupe of the beloved Vego Garden raised beds, which our Senior Editor Liz added to her own front yard a few years ago. And I found just what I was looking for in this 2-pack of metal raised beds from Amazon.

One of the biggest benefits of this raised garden bed is the price. Each bed costs less than $65, which is an incredible price for a metal raised bed of this size.

Setup

The setup wasn’t that difficult, but it did take quite a bit of time to complete. I did the first bed on my own and it took about 2-2.5 hours to put together.

The instructions were very limited. They didn’t include any images other than for a list of the parts and had very brief, unclear written descriptions for the setup process. But these beds are fairly simple to put together just using your own logic.

However, I still made a couple mistakes that I had to fix on the first bed. I wasted quite a bit of time undoing one of the ends of the first bed after I screwed it on because I thought I did it wrong. It turned out I did it right and ended up redoing it again.

It also took extra time putting together the first bed because I did it by myself. I was able to put the bed together just fine, but I enlisted the help of my sister and dad to assist with the second bed. That ended up going faster because I had another person helping to screw all the pieces together while I worked on other parts of the bed. It also helped to have someone hold the sides up while I screwed them together.

Thankfully all of the parts, including screws and nuts, were included in the packaging. There were even extra screws and nuts, which came in handy when a couple screws were damaged and I couldn’t use them. However, you do need to provide your own tools, which include a ratchet and wrench.

Design

These raised beds are 8 feet (2.4 m) long, 4 feet (1.2 m) wide, and 2 (0.6 m) feet deep. They are really quite large, which is exactly what I was looking for when I chose these beds. I wanted to fill as much of my yard as possible with these beds. I even put the one bed over top of an old tree stump. I’m hoping that turning these planters into hügelkultur beds filled with logs, sticks, compost, and plants will suppress the suckers that keep sprouting out of the tree stump.

I will easily be able to grow vining plants like pumpkins, butternut squash, and cucumbers in these beds as well as tons of tomatoes, herbs, and even some flowers for cutting. I plan on adding a trellis to the one raised bed as well to create a privacy screen on the patio that doubles as usable vertical growing space.

These metal raised garden beds are made of steel with a zinc alloy coating and non-toxic paint finish. They come in six different colors: silver, brown, yellow, navy, dark green, and black. I opted for the black powder-coated finish. The beds also come with plastic covers for the corners to prevent any accidental cuts or scrapes while you’re working in your garden, which is a nice touch.

These raised beds have an open bottom, so I recommend laying down cardboard at the base before filling with your growing medium to prevent weeds from coming up from the ground. They also have three turnbuckles in the center of the beds to help stabilize the sides and prevent them from bowing out when you fill the beds with soil.

Our Verdict

All in all, I’m impressed by these metal raised garden beds. I have not filled them or planted in them yet, so the real test of durability and usefulness is still yet to come. But I have high hopes. Because the beds are so large, I intend on filling the bottom half to two-thirds with old logs, dead brush, and finally compost and soil before planting.

I think the height of these beds will make them great for planting and tending to my garden. I won’t have to crouch all the way down to the ground like I have in the past with my in-ground beds.

These raised beds also look great around the perimeter of my patio at the back of my house. Even with nothing planted in them yet, they add privacy and make the space feel more intentional. Once they’re filled with tall green plants and vine-covered trellises, they will be absolutely beautiful.

They're really lightweight and don't kink, too, so are so much easier to use. But the best bit? If you don't have a Japanese hoe then it's about time you did. I find it makes short work of weeding my raised beds, both those full of perennial flowers and in my veggie patch. I'm a big fan of Fiskars' gardening tools, and these pruning scissors make deadheading so quick and easy, compare to using a regular pair of hand pruners. They’re only 6 inches long with ergonomic, soft-grip handles so they fit very comfortably in my hand, and the spring design makes snipping off faded flowers almost effortless – and no-one likes wrist fatigue. But the clincher is the resin-resistant, non-stick stainless steel blades that mean you can keep snipping without stopping to unclog.

I use mine for chopping up logs for the fire pit, and all sorts of DIY projects, as well.

While it still gets the job done without any fuss, a mini chainsaw is so much easier to use than a full-size model, too. You don’t need any strength to operate it as the chain is designed to cut through wood without any pressure applied. It's true that the battery time isn't as long-lasting as that on a bigger model, but the recharge time isn't as lengthy either.

How long garden lights will last outside, subjected to everything the weather can throw at them, depends on the Ingress Rating (IP). This measurement shows how well protected an electrical or mechanical product is in its environment. An IP has two figures: the first relates to solid matter, such as dust, on a scale of 0–6; the second relates to liquids, scaling 0–8.

Many solar lights are rated IP44, and the first number indicates that solid particles smaller than 1mm can’t penetrate, and the second number shows it’ll cope with splashes of water. Solar lights work by using a solar panel to harness the power of sunlight and convert it into electricity. These panels are typically constructed from silicon-based photovoltaic cells – but not all are created equal. You’re likely to find polycrystalline panels on cheaper products, and these absorb less sunlight than more expensive monocrystalline panels. If you live in a sunny climate, or if the product isn’t emitting a high level of lumens, then a polycrystalline panel is perfectly adequate. When in doubt, just add a pot! Honstly, if your garden is looking a little lackluster, I genuinely believe that one of the quickest ways to give it a designer feel is with a large planter. And the good news? Well, you don't need a huge budget to achieve the look.

Yes, while luxury planters can cost hundreds of dollars, some of the best large garden planters out there can be snapped up for a fraction of the price. And they give you some serious bang for your buck, too, as – container garden or not – large garden planters work incredibly hard in a space.

A perfectly placed pot can frame a front door, define a seating area, or bring life to an empty patio corner that feels difficult to style. Plus, in smaller gardens, I have found that a few statement containers can even have more impact than filling every inch with borders.

The Best Large Garden Planters for Instant Impact

Personally, I love nothing more than a big pot; in fact, the large potted trees and oversized window planter in my own garden are the features that consistently look the most polished and designer, even when the rest of the garden is between seasons or looking a little... well, a little unruly.

The trick is choosing planters that look more expensive than they are. Materials with a stone- or concrete-effect finish, oversized shapes, and simple silhouettes all create a premium feel without the designer price tag. And a single large planter filled with architectural plants or colorful flowers can completely change the feel of your garden in an afternoon.

I've always been a little skeptical about predator decoys. The theory is simple enough: hang a realistic-looking bird of prey above your vegetable garden and smaller birds will steer clear, leaving your carefully tended crops alone. But do they actually work, or do birds quickly realise they're being fooled?

As someone who prefers to keep a wildlife-friendly garden, I was intrigued. After all, netting can be effective, but it can also be unsightly and potentially hazardous to critters if not installed correctly. Predator decoys promise a gentler (and, admittedly, more hilarious-looking) solution, using nature's food chain rather than physical barriers to keep hungry visitors at bay.

That made my veggie patch the perfect testing ground. My strawberries are growing in a small raised bed that's just beginning to produce ripe fruit, making them an irresistible target for birds. Or at least they should be; so far, the biggest threat to my harvest has actually been my two children, aged four and one, who seem to view ripe strawberries as a first-come, first-served buffet. (Spoiler: the decoy doesn't appear to work on small humans).

Still, I was curious to see whether it would deter the local bird population. After all, there's a big difference between a product sounding sensible in theory and proving useful in a real garden. So, with that in mind, I treated myself to a decoy of my own...

Setting Up the Predator Decoy

One thing I quickly discovered is that some predator decoys can be surprisingly awkward to position. The one I fished out of my daughter's toybox (yes, a grandparent gifted her one by mistake; what of it?) needed to appear as though it was hovering or flying above the crops rather than sitting motionless on the ground, and this presented a bit of a challenge in my garden.

Now, I wasn't prepared to install a permanent pole or bracket just for the sake of an experiment, so I improvised by attaching the decoy to a pyramid trellis above my vegetable bed. As you can see above, the result looked, frankly, a little bonkers.

That said, gardeners with mature trees, fences, pergolas, or existing brackets will likely find installation much easier. In the right setting, a hanging decoy could look considerably more convincing than my makeshift setup.

Did It Actually Work?

Surprisingly, I think it might have. While it's impossible to know exactly what the birds are thinking (I can't even figure out what my own birth month bird has in mind), my strawberries have remained largely untouched throughout the trial. More tellingly, I've noticed sparrows and other small birds happily landing in nearby planters and flower beds while giving the area around the strawberry patch a noticeably wider berth.

Yes, fine; that's hardly scientific proof, but it does suggest the decoy is having some effect. If birds were completely ignoring it, I'd expect them to treat every part of the garden equally. Instead, they seem perfectly comfortable visiting other areas while avoiding the space directly beneath the faux predator.

Still, no deterrent is guaranteed to work forever. Many experts suggest birds can eventually become accustomed to static decoys, particularly if they're left in the same position for weeks on end. Moving them regularly is often recommended to maintain the illusion of danger.

Shop for Predator Decoys:

If you're struggling with birds gobbling up your fruit and want a wildlife-friendly deterrent, I'd say a predator decoy is worth considering. It's easy to install, doesn't harm wildlife, and appears to have offered at least some protection for my strawberry crop.

That said, you'll need somewhere suitable to position it, and you may have to get creative if your garden lacks convenient structures. My trellis-mounted setup wasn't exactly a triumph of garden design, but hey, if it helps preserve a few extra strawberries, I can live with that.

Just don't expect it to keep determined toddlers away from your harvest. For that, I'm still waiting for someone to invent a more effective solution.

I’m an old-fashioned gardener. I love the smell of soil and the feeling of dirt under my fingernails. So when I was tasked with testing a high-tech indoor hydroponic growing system, I was a bit suspicious. Though I’ve read about and researched hydroponics for my job as a gardening editor, I had never tried this technique myself.

For my first foray into the world of hydroponics, I tested the LPH-Max Hydroponics Growing System from LetPot from Amazon to see if it could give me a constant supply of fresh produce in the dead of winter as well as the rest of the year. And I’m happy to report it really is possible to grow salad greens and herbs indoors all year – but there are a few caveats.

If you’re a tech buff and plant lover and have a couple hundred bucks burning a hole in your pocket, this may be the perfect growing system for you. But if this is your first go at indoor vegetable gardening, I’ll share some beginner-friendly and budget-conscious alternatives to try out instead. But don't wait to long to decide which one is right for you. The LetPot LPH-Max and my alternative choices are all on sale now for Amazon Prime Day.

What I Liked

The LetPot LPH-Max, which is on sale now for Amazon Prime Day, is a compact way to grow a lot of edible plants indoors all year long. With 21 small pods (and two large pods) for hydroponic plants, you can practically grow a whole garden from the comfort of your kitchen. That makes this growing system ideal for apartment-dwellers, gardeners with small yards or yards that make growing a vegetable garden impossible, as well as home chefs who want fresh herbs or greens right there at their fingertips.

This system is mess-free, too. That’s one of the big draws of hydroponics – there’s no dirt involved. The kit comes with 21 small sponge-like pods that fit into plastic baskets and are suspended in water mixed with plant food in the tank underneath. All you have to do is fill the tank with water, add the plant food mixture (this kit comes with two types you mix up and simply pour into the water tank), then pop your pods into the tray, and plant your seeds. After that, simply refill the water tank and replenish with plant food as needed.

If you’re lean more tech-savvy or are interested in a bigger hydroponic setup, there’s an option to use the LPH-Max in automatic mode (I opted for manual, which I’ll explain later). This allows you to totally step away from any care or maintenance of your indoor garden. The LPH-Max and the app do it all for you. This is an awesome feature if you’re headed out of town, especially for an extended time. Or if you want fresh produce, but don’t want to do anything to grow it.

The LPH-Max was fairly easy to set up. It took me about an hour to read through the directions, sort out the pieces, figure out how everything fit together, then fill it with water, and plant your seeds. It could have been more straight-forward but, even for someone who’s technologically-challenged like me, it really wasn’t that bad.

LetPot also provides stickers to cover the seedlings during germination (but some seeds need sunlight to sprout) and humidity domes to help keep seeds moist. I tested a combination of with and without each element to see if it made a difference to germination rates. It did not.

I was genuinely shocked that my basil grew so well in just a mixture of water and plant food. Hydroponics is kind of amazing! While I still believe nothing beats planting seeds in the ground and watching them emerge out of nowhere, watching them sprout out of a damp sponge is pretty cool, too.

What I Didn’t Like

Though the LPH-Max had a lot of really great features, especially for those who are tech-inclined or have limited space to grow, it also had some drawbacks. The first problem I ran into when setting up my LetPot was deciding whether or not to use the automatic mode or manual mode.

I really wanted to test out all the features, including the automatic watering and feeding because that was one of the main draws of this particular hydroponic system. But in order to use the automatic mode, you need a 7 liter reservoir to hold the extra water that the LetPot will pump in to replenish the tank when it gets empty.

That just wasn’t an option for me. I have a rambunctious cat who loves playing in her water bowl. I can’t imagine what she would have done to a whole bucket full of water. That also would have limited where I could put my LetPot. I have a pretty compact house and I have recently-refinished hardwood floors. There was no way I was going to put a big bucket of water on my new wood floors.

But even if I had no cat, lots of space, and floors I didn’t care about, there was still the issue of finding a container that could hold 7 liters of water. The automatic mode is one of the major selling points of this system. All of the components you need to set that up should be included – especially at the LPH-Max’s $250 price point. But it's on sale for $210 during Amazon Prime Day, so it makes it a little more accessible to try out.

Which brings me to my next stumbling block. After I decided on manual mode and put my LetPot together (the top tray didn’t fit properly, which was another minor hiccup), I was ready to plant. It was then I realized that the LPH-Max doesn’t come with seeds.

Now, this isn’t a make or break problem that should turn you off of buying the LPH-Max completely, but it was yet another frustration that didn’t need to exist. And again, at $250, you would think a few cents worth of seeds would be included. But for Amazon Prime Day, this hydroponic growing system is $40 off so that money can go towards tons of seeds.

I hadn’t done my annual seed shopping yet and it was too early to find seeds in most stores when I was testing out this system. So I ended up using old, expired seeds from several years ago. Most of them didn’t sprout, which isn’t LetPot’s fault. But it does mean that this system isn’t necessarily the best choice for beginners who are brand new to gardening.

I’ve been gardening for over a decade, and even I was a little intimidated by the hydroponic element. I’m not sure what grows best in a setup like this because I’ve never done it before. So it would have been helpful to have everything I need, seeds and all.

Why You Should Buy

Ultimately, I think LetPot’s LPH-Max would be a good choice for someone who already has a hydroponic system or has used one in the past. It would be a nice addition to another hydroponic setup that’s already in place. But with the need for an extra reservoir (and the extra space that requires), it’s not the best for someone with limited knowledge and room.
