Growth of fruit for fresh eating is one of most common reasons listed by gardeners who have decided to begin a home orchard. Gardeners who plant fruit trees often dream of abundant harvests of the ripe, succulent fruit. While fruit picked fresh from the tree is quite delicious, many fruit trees are overlooked due to their lack of fresh-eating quality. One such example, the Yellow Pershore plum tree, is known for its characteristic acidity and use in jams, jellies, and preserves. While this plum tree is not highly sought after for its fresh eating qualities, it remains a favorite of growers wishing to preserve the harvest.

Yellow Pershore Plum Information

Sometimes known as ‘Yellow Egg’ plum, Pershore plums are a large, egg-shaped variety of European plum. Most often used in cooking, the Yellow Pershore plum tree is a heavy yielder and reaches over 16 feet (5 m.) tall at maturity. Since the trees are self-fertile, growers need not worry about the need to plant additional pollinator trees for this variety of plum, as fruit set will occur with a single planting.

Growing Yellow Pershore Plums

Due to their use as a specialty crop, it may be somewhat more difficult to find saplings of the Yellow Pershore plum tree locally. Luckily, the plants are readily available for purchase online. When purchasing plants online, always make certain to order from a reputable source to ensure that transplants are healthy and disease free. To plant, choose a well-draining planting location which receives direct sunlight. Before planting, soak the root ball of the plum sapling in water for at least one hour. Prepare and amend the planting hole so that it is at least twice as wide and deep as the root ball of the sapling. Plant, and then fill in the hole, making certain not to cover the collar of the tree. Then, water thoroughly. Surround the planting with a generous application of mulch. Once established, care of Yellow Pershore plums is relatively simple, as the plum trees demonstrate considerable disease resistance. As with all fruit trees, the Yellow Pershore plum tree will need routine irrigation, fertilization, and pruning.
