There are surprisingly many houseplants with red flowers that you can easily grow indoors. Some of them are easier than others, but here are some of the most commonly available red flowering houseplants. 

Before going into some of the best red flowering houseplants, you’ll need to know a little about how to care for flowering plants indoors. In general, flowering houseplants require a few hours of direct sunshine indoors to do their best. A temperature range of 65-75 F. (18-24 C.) during the day, and a little cooler at night, is appropriate.

What Houseplants Have a Red Flower?

There are quite a few plants that can be grown with red flowers indoors. 

  • Lipstick plants have gorgeous red flowers which resemble red lipstick emerging from a maroon base. They are actually in the same family of plants as African violets, known as Gesneriads. Lipstick plants are typically grown in hanging baskets, as they can trail quite a bit.
  • Anthuriums have gorgeous waxy, red flowers that are very long lasting. Technically, the red “flower” is actually the spathe. The flowers themselves are small and insignificant, but the red spathes are quite striking. Be careful, though, because all parts of the plant are poisonous.
  • Hibiscus can also have red flowers, but they come in a large array of colors. These are tropical plants that need a lot of sun and warmth in order to do their best. 

Holiday Plants with Red Flowers

There are many plants that are typically sold around the holidays that have red flowers, but make great plants year-round. 

  • Poinsettias are considered the most popular plant in the world. They come in a variety of colors, but the red parts are actually the bract and not the flowers. The flowers are actually small and insignificant. They can be grown indoors year-round, but need special treatment in order to rebloom.
  • Kalanchoes have beautiful clusters of red flowers, but also come in a variety of colors. They are succulents, so be sure to care for them like a standard succulent. They are easy to rebloom if you are able to give them sufficient sunlight.
  • Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) have enormous flowers and put on quite a show. There are red varieties, but come in a large array of colors. Allow the leaves to ripen during the growing season. They require a dormant period of a few weeks before it can rebloom again. 
  • Last, but not least, holiday cacti, such as Thanksgiving cactus and Christmas cactus, have beautiful red flowers and also come in other colors. They are easy to rebloom and can be very long-lived plants. They are actually true cacti, but they are jungle cacti and will grow on trees.
