Honoring women’s achievements with flowers goes way back, and there’s no better way to convey your love and admiration to the women in your life or around the world than with a heartfelt bouquet of International Women’s Day plants. Read on to learn more about this Women’s Day celebration.

What Does International Women’s Day Mean?

Occurring each year on March 8th, International Women’s Day was created to celebrate the achievements of women, as well as bring to light issues surrounding gender equality. Though the exact origins of International Women’s Day are not known, many political and social movements throughout the early 1900’s are believed to have laid the foundation for the now annual celebration.

At its core, the values which the day represents are said to include: equality, respect, hope, dignity, and justice.

Both men and women choose this day to celebrate special or influential women in their own lives. Doing so with flowers has become quite common, as it has a strong connection to the past and origins of the day. Customarily, International Women’s Day flowers included beautiful yellow mimosas, from the Acacia tree family. Believed to have started in Italy, the custom of giving mimosa flowers dates back even further. Among the first flowers to bloom in spring, their enchanting light fragrance serves as a symbol of appreciation and solidarity.

Other flowers which are considered International Women’s Day plants often feature the colors of purple, green, and white. While purple flowers have long been associated with justice, green and white symbolize hope and purity. Choosing symbolic flowers is an excellent way to convey meaning with a floral arrangement. Gladiolus, for example, are representative of those with strong character and honor. The thoughtful creation of cut flower arrangements can truly create a one-of-a-kind, meaningful gift.

Flowers for Women’s Day can range greatly, though roses are always an extremely popular gift. Of course, it will also be important to note the preferences of the gift recipient. While tradition is to be valued, some may prefer more spring-themed arrangements. Bouquets of lilies, tulips, or ranunculus all convey feelings of love and appreciation to the recipient.

Regardless of the flowers chosen, the special women in our lives are sure to feel celebrated for all that they have done and continue to do.
