Kris Jenner’s Christmas Throwback Is Bringing Back This Retro Houseplant – and It’s the Surprise Hit of the Holidays
After Kris Jenner’s Christmas throwback, everyone’s rediscovering this bold and glossy ’70s houseplant.
I still remember the first time I saw an anthurium in real life. I was walking around a small store one November many years ago, and three or four of these beautiful red plants sat in a corner by the greeting cards. They looked stunning – so glossy and such a statement.
It’s easy to see why reality-TV icon and business mogul Kris Jenner, known for her lavish seasonal décor, incorporated anthuriums into her Christmas design, as seen in a throwback photo shared on her Instagram. While Kris didn’t caption the photo with plant details, the image clearly showed the signature red, heart-shaped flowers that have made anthuriums a favorite for chic interiors.

If you’re looking for a slightly more unusual form of Christmas décor that isn’t your typical poinsettia, an anthurium makes a stunning alternative. Its combination of deep red spathes, bright green leaves, and glossy finish brings a luxurious edge to traditional holiday colors.
Still not convinced? I spoke to an LA-based floral expert to share the exact reasons why this bold bloom would be the perfect addition to your home.
Why Anthuriums are Perfect for Christmas Décor
Everyone has their own tastes when it comes to decorating for the holidays, but if you love the classic tones of green, red, and gold, anthuriums effortlessly combine all three.
In addition to their timeless color palette, the plant’s natural sheen looks beautiful under festive lighting – especially when placed near glass ornaments or metallic accents.
Adrian Aviles, owner of the century-old Athletic Club Flower Shop, explains why anthuriums are such an inspired choice:

“Anthuriums are an unexpected plant that works well as holiday décor. Their red and green tones are classic Christmas colors, yet the plants feel modern, and their sculptural look sets them apart from the usual poinsettia.
“The glossy anthurium flower reflects light like a shiny ornament. They bring holiday colors and personality, but in a fresh, non-traditional way. Even a single anthurium plant is enough to make a statement."
How to Use Anthuriums in Your Holiday Décor
Anthuriums are tropical plants and should be kept indoors in cool climates, as they aren’t built to handle frost or low temperatures.
If you live somewhere warm enough to decorate outdoors, a pair of potted anthuriums on either side of your main doorway would make a stunning first impression. Otherwise, there’s plenty of potential indoors for these bold bloomers to shine.
“If I had to choose just one place to use an anthurium at Christmas, I’d place a large plant – or a pair – near a main entrance,” says Aviles. “It creates an instant focal point and sets a warm, festive tone the moment someone walks in.
“Alternatively, for dining-table centerpieces, cut anthurium arrangements are a great option when a full plant might feel too big. The stems have a natural elegance and sculptural quality, so as a centerpiece they add color, shine, and sophistication without overwhelming the space.”
Expert tip: Anthuriums prefer bright, indirect light and consistent moisture – never let them dry out completely, but avoid soggy soil. Keep them away from drafts or heating vents, and wipe the leaves occasionally to maintain their high-gloss shine.
(Note: Anthuriums are mildly toxic if ingested, so keep them out of reach of pets and children.)
