The garden can be many things: a refuge from life’s storms, a grounding environment when anxiety takes over, and a space to find yourself again and again as you pare back to the basics and pour your heart into the Earth.

If this resonates, then you'll appreciate the upcoming film The Gardener. Produced by Sunflower Films, the movie explores an array of quietly poignant themes through the eyes of its protagonist, Sabena, and intertwines the beauty of being human with the restorative power of nature in a perfect balance.

Sabena begins to fall in love with gardening, largely thanks to the encouragement of a mysterious gardener (William Miller) she encounters on the property. From that moment, the garden becomes Sabena's place of sanctuary. It helps her begin to unpack her grief.

The gentle rhythms of tending to nature remind her of the power she yields in her own hands to turn her pain into something beautiful. And though it may be hard to fathom blossoming while feeling so many difficult emotions, we get to watch Sabena transform and evolve – while her garden grows alongside her.

Words From the Director

The Gardener is more than a film; it is, by all accounts, a labour of love – shaped slowly and with intention to reach both heart and mind.

Reflecting on the journey to screen, director Dabney Day shares: "The Gardener has lived with me for many years – not simply as a project but as a presence asking for patience and trust in timing. It wasn’t something I could rush or force – it needed to be tended, much like the act of gardening itself.

"I was most fortunate to gather around me such a creative and dynamic cast and crew who formed a family of gardeners to nurture the gentle power of knowing. Our two leads, Radha and William, connected from day one, captivating us as they brought truth and joy to moments small and grand.

"This film is an offering, meant to be received in whatever way feels right for each person. Its presence, our dream, is now a reality. I'm excited to share our work with you and to experience together the transcendent beauty of “The Gardener.”

The Gardener blooms in theaters from April 17. You can learn more about this touching movie via the official site, as well as submit a request for the film to be screened in your community.

The film’s theatrical distributor, Area 23a, is also behind acclaimed documentaries, including Fantastic Fungi and Common Ground.
