When my husband and I bought our first home, I was thrilled — but then I looked out at the yard. Suddenly, I had roughly a third of an acre of grass to take care of, complete with compacted clay soil and a five zone in-ground sprinkler system (along with a sixth zone for drip irrigation).

Living in the Pacific Northwest means we get a lot of rain, but our summers can still run incredibly dry. My old sprinkler control panel was about as "dumb" (and old) as it gets. I simply set an amount of time to water each zone, and it would run blindly on that schedule. Every time it rained (which is often!), I had to run to the garage to manually turn the system off so I wasn't wasting water or drowning my lawn.

I knew there had to be an easier way, so I decided to test out the ImoLaza Smart Sprinkler Controller. I am officially obsessed — it's the ultimate "set-it-and-forget-it" lawn care hack.

The 15-Minute Setup

I am not an electrician, so the thought of rewiring a control panel felt a little intimidating. To be honest, I had my husband come into the garage with me to help out because I wasn't sure I'd get the installation right. But surprisingly, the setup took us maybe 15 minutes tops, and it was so easy I could've done it all myself.

My biggest pro-tip: Before you disconnect your old panel, take a picture of the wiring so you know exactly what goes where! The ImoLaza comes with a super handy guide on where to place your screws to mount the sleek new panel to the wall. After that, you simply push the wires into their corresponding zone sections.

I did have a tiny bit of trouble getting the panel to connect to my home Wi-Fi at first, but I managed to fix it within minutes. Once it was connected, it was up and running flawlessly, and I haven't had a single issue since!

What I Liked

The amount of customization this system offers through its phone app is staggering. Instead of just guessing how long to water, the app had me input super detailed information for each of my zones — including my grass type, my compacted clay soil, and how much sunlight that specific zone gets. Using that data, the app automatically recommended exactly how often, and at what time, to water!

But the best feature by far is the built-in weather intelligence. The ImoLaza connects to your local weather station for hyper-accurate forecasting. It doesn't just skip a watering cycle when it's actively raining; it knows exactly how much rain has fallen. If it determines that the rainfall was heavy enough, it will automatically skip the next day's watering too, assuming the soil is still perfectly saturated. It sends a handy notification to my phone every time the system runs or skips, giving me total peace of mind.

It also has brilliant specialty settings. With just a tap on my phone, I can tell it we are going on vacation, put it in winterize mode, or activate a "reseeding" mode that automatically adjusts the watering amount to encourage new grass growth!

What I Didn't Like

Honestly, my only complaint is that the app's zone customization is almost too thorough! When it was asking me highly specific questions about my soil type and gradient, I admittedly didn't know the answers to all of them. At a certain point I just went with the defaults and hoped that was enough.

However, if you're a data nerd or a lawn care perfectionist, you will absolutely love this level of granular control. You can even buy a rainfall sensor, like this one, that easily plugs into the system to give you exact moisture data directly from your dirt, rather than just relying on the local weather station!

Why You Should Buy

Whether you're a total lawn care newbie like me, or you're a pro hoping to take a more hands-off approach while still guaranteeing your lawn gets exactly what it needs, this controller only helps. It completely eliminates the mental load of tracking the weather or rushing to the garage to override a scheduled watering.

Plus, they have different systems for a different number of zones, so you don't have to get the 8-zone model like I did! You can get a 4-zone or even a 12-zone system, making it a totally customizable upgrade for your spring lawn prep.

I couldn't recommend the ImoLaza Smart Sprinkler Controller more!
