ALDI’s New $7 Bug Fan is the Easy Insect Repellent Solution Your Backyard Needs This Summer
Keep your patio table free of flies and mosquitoes with this fab middle aisle find.
Yes, we love nature, but would we really rather flies and mozzies left us alone when we’re enjoying life in the garden? For sure! If you’d rather relax on your patio bug-free, then don’t miss the $6.99 bug repellent fan currently in ALDI’s middle aisle.
Bug fans work by spinning two strips of holographic, reflective material that refract sunlight, creating an area of visual disturbance that most insects won’t venture into it. The air movement they foster further deters weak-flying insects like flies and mosquitoes.
I’ve been meaning to buy a fly fan for ages as I don't like the harsh chemicals used in some bug repellents. And while I secretly adore the potent aroma of citronella, I’m never really sure if outdoor candles are ever very effective. So a non-toxic, zero-odor method to keep bugs away is appealing. As patio ideas go, it's a winner, and a great addition to my pots of plants that naturally deter mosquitoes.
ALDI’s Ambiano Bug Repellant Fan comes in three colorways: sleek white, smart black and faux wood. With a flat base, it's designed to stand on a table, and is powered by two AA batteries (included) or via a USB connection (cable included). The soft, flexible blades stop spinning if touched, so you don't need to worry about accidentally knocking the fan while it's in motion.
A Big Win For Outdoor Dining
Because bug fans effectively create a no-fly zone in their immediate vicinity, they're a great solution for outdoor dining. The fans typically spin above the height of the food, creating a protective canopy, though you may need two or three fans to keep a bigger table fly-free.
Similarly, a jug of lemonade or a sweet cocktail can act as a bug magnet, so a repellent fan standing sentry will save any unfortunate plucking out of unlucky swimmers. If you love summer picnics, then a fan is small enough to carry with you, too.
I've been seriously impressed with ALDI's garden design finds so far this year, from last week's metal raised planters to the lovely lemon-print gardening accessories, so I'm keeping a keen eye out for more stylish backyard bargains.

Alternative Bug Repellent Fans
ALDI's bug fan dropped in stores Wednesday, 13 May, and will only be in stock for a limited time. If you don't make it to the middle aisle in time, here are some alternative insect repellent fans.
These battery-powered fans have a flexible stem making them easy to transport, and a hook enables them to be hung upside down as well as upright on the sturdy bases.
The soft blades pause when touched then automatically resume. This model can be powered by AA batteries or recharged via a USB cable, and is almost silent.
A full charge runs this quiet fan for 20 hours, and the charge level is clearly shown. Dual-sided blades give coverage of 2.6–3.3', and a woodgrain base looks stylish.
