Let’s be honest: as much as we might wish otherwise – especially in winter – most of us aren’t jetting off to a Mediterranean villa or a secluded coastal retreat anytime soon.
Recently, though, Gal Gadot gave us a glimpse of exactly that energy. She shared a series of Instagram snaps lounging in a sun-soaked park, framed by billowing rose bushes and lush greenery. She looked so effortlessly relaxed, you’d never guess “save the world” sits anywhere on her to-do list.
While a spontaneous summer escape might not be on the cards, you don’t need Wonder Woman’s budget to recreate that “weekend away” feeling at home. With a few thoughtful planting choices and some intentionally cozy corners, you can transform your backyard into a sanctuary – one that feels less like “the place where I pull weeds” and more like “the place where I hide from my emails.”
Frame Your View with Flowering Borders
The secret to Gal’s picturesque backdrop is the layering. Those roses weren't just sitting there; they created a wall of color that felt like a natural hug. To get this look, focus on flowering borders.
If you want that instant English garden energy, look for repeat-blooming shrub roses or hydrangeas. These give your garden structure and a sense of being enclosed. If you’re just starting out from scratch, try these Fiskars Cuts + More garden shears from Lowe’s, as they are super sharp and multi-purpose.
Think Big with Potted Trees
Nothing says "luxury hotel terrace in Italy" quite like a potted citrus or olive tree. Not only do they add height, but they also provide an architectural element that a standard flower bed just can’t match. Plus, if you’re in the mood and the atmosphere suits you, there’s something so sophisticated about sitting next to an olive tree while sipping wine (or another beverage of your choice).
If you have a patio that’s on the sunnier side (and let me just metaphorically shake your hand and say, “congratulations on winning at life”), try a Meyer lemon or Calamondin orange tree. If you're in a slightly chillier climate, a faux version or a hardy topiary can also work wonders. If you go the topiary route, this terracotta planter from Target is simple and can be used on stairs, patios, or anywhere else you like.

Pro tip: Put your heavier pots on top of rolling casters (little wheels you can add to almost anything) so you can chase the sun or hide from the wind. Throwing your back out is certainly not in the cards on vacation (even a stay-cation).
Create a "Destination" Lounge
A vacation vibe is 10% plants and 90% having a comfortable place to ignore your responsibilities. Gal wasn’t sitting in a giant, clunky chair but in a small, intimate table nestled among the greenery.
Rather than a massive dining table, opt for a chic bistro set or a pair of Adirondack chairs. To really nail this look, add a waterproof outdoor rug like this one from Amazon. . It will act as a cue to your brain that now is the time to relax, no lawnmowers allowed.
Low-Maintenance Mediterranean Plants
If you want the aesthetic of a high-end getaway without spending every Saturday morning with a watering hose, these hardy, low-maintenance beauties are for you:
- Lavender: This is the ultimate vacation plant as it makes the area smell like a spa and practically thrives on neglect.
- Bougainvillea: These pack a punch with their bright pink color; they love the heat, and look gorgeous climbing a trellis.
- Rosemary: It’s evergreen, and you can always throw a sprig in your lemonade.
- Olive Trees: Even the dwarf varieties add an instant "European summer" feel to a porch.
The Final Flourish
Transforming your garden area into a vacation setting isn’t about perfection, but it’s about the ability to breathe a little deeper, which is what we all like to do in the summer. It’s okay to start small with a few new perennials or a comfy pillow. As your space evolves, don’t be surprised if your friends start asking for your “resort’s” WIFI password.
