Color selection is such a key aspect of ornamental garden planning. Choosing coordinating colors is quite common, as it helps to ensure that flower beds have an overall cohesive feel.

One popular technique is to incorporate several darker floral shades to add depth and dimension to plantings. Dark red flowers or plants with dark red foliage are especially good choices, as they are also considered to be quite attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators.

Below, we will explore some high-quality plant varieties for the landscape which produce deep burgundy color flowers.

  1. Buckeye Belle Peony - These red perennial flowers are known for their large, dark semi-double blooms. Brilliant red flowers, which are held on thick stems, open to display bright contrasting yellow stamens. Exceptionally beautiful, these peony flowers also have an excellent vase life, making them ideal for use in cutting gardens. Like most cultivars of peony, Buckeye Belle peony plants are long-lived and require little seasonal care.
  2. Happy Days Cherry Red Dahlia - This dark red dahlia flower produces vibrant single blooms, which are held high above their dramatic foliage. As a smaller variety of dahlia, Happy Days Cherry Red is a good candidate for growing in pots and in containers. Dahlias are often considered to be heavy feeders, and need routine applications of fertilizer throughout the growing season to ensure the best bloom possible.
  3. Holy Grail Hibiscus - Growing into quite a large specimen, Holy Grail hibiscus plants open to produce impressive masses of burgundy color flowers. These hardy hibiscus are also recognized for their deep foliage, which maintains its intense color throughout the entirety of the summer growing season. Hardy hibiscus plants are at home in tall borders, and may even work well to add privacy in urban settings.
  4. Really Red Supertunia Petunia - Supertunia petunias are known for their ease of growth and ability to live in pots and containers, Really Red Supertunia is no exception to this. These petunias will continue to flower throughout the entire growing season with very little care from growers.

Maroon flowers generally begin to appear in late summer, and eventually, begin to fade as cooler weather arrives in autumn. Like most sedum, this variety is quite robust and tolerant to heat and prolonged periods of drought.
