Miniature gardens, also known as “fairy gardens,” refer to small pots or portions of flower beds used to depict tiny landscapes or other scenes. Fairy gardens are popular among people of all ages, as many find joy in the creativity and carefree sense of whimsy used to create such interesting garden environments. The use of small flowering plants is key in the creation of these imaginative spaces. However, some gardeners may be uncertain which small flowers to plant.

Miniature gardens are often arranged in very small pots. Therefore, finding tiny flowers to grow may be key in making certain that space is used efficiently. Fortunately, there are several small perennial flowering plants and annuals ideal for such ornamental uses.

- Grasses - Various types of ornamental grasses can add a light and airy feel to small planters. Dwarf mondo grass is among the most popular cultivars of grass for these types of garden spaces.
- Groundcovers - Groundcovers are extremely versatile when used in ornamental pots and containers. Though Irish and Scotch moss are most commonly used in miniature gardens, they may leave much to be desired in terms of bloom. Fortunately, other groundcovers, like creeping phlox, can quickly grow to fill planting spaces with colorful blooms. The addition of groundcovers to plantings may also help to keep soil cool, as well as reduce the need for frequent watering throughout the growing season.
- Herbs - Dwarf herbs can help to create miniature gardens that are appealing to the senses. The use of especially fragrant herbs, like lavender, is sure to attract the attention of both pollinators and passersby.
- Succulents - Succulents have long been considered a good candidate for growth in small garden spaces. In addition to their unique leaves and forms, succulents are celebrated for their ability to withstand prolonged periods of drought and less-than-ideal growing conditions.
