What Is Applegate Garlic: Applegate Garlic Care And Growing Tips
Garlic is not only delicious, but it’s good for you. Some people find garlic a little too strong, however. For those whose taste buds prefer milder garlic, try growing Applegate garlic plants. What is Applegate garlic? Keep reading for Applegate garlic info and care.
What is Applegate Garlic?
Applegate garlic plants are of the softneck variety of garlic, specifically artichoke. They feature multiple layers of even sized cloves, about 12 to 18 per large bulb. Each clove is individually covered with a light yellow to white paper splashed with purple.
The cloves are off-white with a mild, creamy flavor perfect for use in recipes that require fresh garlic without giving that pungent, ‘knock your socks off’ finish of most other garlic varieties.
Applegate Garlic Care
As mentioned, Applegate garlic is an artichoke subtype of heirloom softneck garlic. That means that it is easy to grow and rarely bolts (sends up scapes). Like the leaves of an artichoke, it has layers of even sized cloves. Applegate matures early in the season and has a milder flavor than many other garlic types, which makes it a perfect choice for those who eat garlic for their health.
Applegate is an excellent type of garlic to grow in warmer regions. When growing Applegate garlic, select a site that is in full sun, in loamy soil with a pH of between 6.0 and 7.0.
Plant softneck garlic in the fall with the cloves pointed end up and about 3 to 4 (8-10 cm.) inches deep and 6 inches (15 cm.) apart.
Applegate garlic will be ready to harvest the following summer and will store into midwinter.
