Some celebrity homes make an impression because they’re glamorous – but Drew Barrymore’s stands out for a different reason entirely. The actress and talk-show host has transformed her bathroom into what she affectionately calls a “miniature greenhouse,” a lush, plant-filled retreat that brings the serenity of nature indoors.

For Barrymore, this nature-first approach is deeply personal. “Nature is my teacher. It is my calming space. It is my humbling place,” she said in an interview with Visit California. Her passion for the outdoors runs through her recent partnership with the National Parks Foundation, where she has spoken openly about how restorative time in nature has been throughout her life.

Growing up in California, Barrymore visited Joshua Tree National Park often – a landscape of yucca, agaves, surreal boulders, and iconic desert silhouettes that continues to influence her aesthetic. And now, some of that inspiration is finding its way inside her home.

How Drew’s Love of Nature Is Shaping Her Indoor Spaces

The desert tones and structural shapes of Joshua Tree can be echoed indoors through a range of houseplants. Monocot plants with spiky, architectural forms – such as yucca varieties or Dracaena cultivars like ‘Colorama’, ‘Magenta’, and ‘Tricolor’ – can recreate some of the sculptural feel of Barrymore’s beloved landscape. Agaves such as the ‘Blue Glow’ variety also thrive in containers, making them perfect for adding a subtle desert influence to your décor.

But Barrymore’s most relatable and inspiring design choice isn’t in her living room – it’s in her bathroom, where she has created a space that feels like stepping into a personal nature retreat.

On the last slide of her post, captioned "Some moments lately", Drew showed her bath filled with plants, including hanging jasmine, a money tree, and kalanchoe.

“I was dying for some nature,” Barrymore told People, “and so I was like, ‘I'm going to get some plants.’ I'm not growing much, but I'm trying to keep plants alive with the right lights. If it wasn't for them, they'd be dead.”

Her down-to-earth honesty – and the fact that her bathroom looks surprisingly normal, with a simple shower-tub combo – has made fans feel like they can recreate the look themselves. And they absolutely can (and not just with pieces from her Beautiful bathroom collection at Walmart).

The Best Plants for a Bathroom Greenhouse

If your bathroom has low light, don’t worry – Drew’s does too. Luckily, there are plenty of plants that thrive in dimmer rooms, and grow lights can supplement whatever sunlight you lack.

Bathrooms are the most humid rooms in the home – meaning they naturally mimic rainforest conditions. Many popular indoor plants adore this environment, including:

Whether placed on shelves, used as shower plants, or clustered around a window, these varieties thrive on moisture and reward you with lush, thriving foliage.

Bringing Nature Into Daily Life

Barrymore has long advocated for the calming, grounding power of nature – indoors and out. “I thought about how wonderful it would be to just get into nature and how calming it is for the senses… nature just brought me back down to a saner, more peaceful place, and I think nature is so emblematic too,” she told Real Homes.

Creating a miniature greenhouse in her bathroom is just one way she’s brought that philosophy into everyday life. For her, it marks “a whole new chapter” – one that feels “very therapeutic.”

And for anyone looking to begin their own next chapter? A bathroom greenhouse, no matter how small, might be the perfect place to start.
