Winter can feel like it drags on forever. The shorter days, cooler weather and gloomy clouds are far from inviting, and at times can make a person feel down.

Even if you live somewhere sunnier, the start of the year can still feel uneventful off the back of Christmas celebrations, and filled by the anxiety of a blank slate ahead.

The perfect remedy? Some beautiful, cheery yellow flowers like America's Got Talent's Heidi Klum put on her winter picnic table. They instantly made me smile, and ponder whether a winter picnic of my own would be a cute idea. (Check out slide 2).

Here's exactly why Heidi's flowers are so cheerful, according to a flower expert, as well as why they perfectly evoke the energy of spring and brighten winter instantly.

Why are Heidi's flowers bringing cheerful, spring energy?

When people think of happiness as a color, a lot of people think of yellow. It's the color we drew the sun as in coloring books as kids, something bright and energetic.

Floral designer Lisa Burford of Posy Laboratory explains that the contrast the bright colors in Heidi's bouquet create against the backdrop of winter can really help lift a person out of feeling the "winter blues".

"This bouquet is basically a collection of happy things. When it's cgray, cold, and overcast outside, having this much yellow in your space acts like a stand-in for the sun. It is a visual dose of optimism that reminds you spring is eventually coming back."

Lisa also noted how the inclusion of certain flowers, including sunflowers, lilies and chrysanthemums are symbolic of positivity and strength, further adding to the way the bouquet seeks to lift a person's spirits.

"Both the mums and sunflowers symbolize happiness, and lilies are often associated with strength and peace, so the whole arrangement is designed to lift your spirits just by looking at it."

What flowers are in the bouquet?

Breaking down the bouquet, these are the blooms that Lisa identified. They pop stunningly against the green of the bouquet's foliage - something in itself that can be more scarce during this season of the year.

  • Chrysanthemums in greens, yellows, purples and white. Colors are kept subtle to not overpower the yellow overarching tone of the bouquet. The white blooms also tie in with the white theme of the tablecloth and dinnerware. Purple provides a soft pop of color
  • Asian lilies in yellow. An elegant silhouette to add to the bouquet to provide a different shape
  • Roses in yellow, peeking out from the bottom of the bouquet to create layers of dimension and visual interest
  • A sprig of solidago central to the bouquet to tie in with the green of the flower stems and leaves
  • Marigolds - a cheerful classic with a beautiful, vibrant yellow hue
