After long months of snow and cold, spring is on the way! Early bulbs will be popping up and cheering us with their sunny faces. Many gardeners spend spring readying their vegetables and flowers to be planted, but sometimes they overlook a more humble plant that needs a little attention this time of year: grass.
Spring lawn maintenance will make all the difference come summer. Lush summer lawns are the result of preparation and forethought in the spring. Proper spring lawn care will mean your grass is thicker, healthier, and more resilient through the rest of the year.
I have compiled a spring lawn care starter kit to help you get the best lawn.
Spring Lawn Cleanup
Once the nighttime temperatures consistently reach 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 C) you can begin your lawn cleanup. It is important to wait until this temperature to help your local pollinators survive so they can do their work to support our ecosystem!
This unique rake has sturdy tines that make quick work of leaves, sticks, tree nuts, and dead grass during your spring lawn cleanup. It is also great for spreading mulch and clearing debris from shrubs.
2-pack garden waste bags with attachable tarp will make it easy to rake up leaves, dead grass, and other yard debris to put on your compost pile.
The Greenworks cordless mower is a favorite of Gardening Know How team member Allie. It is lightweight, efficient, and effective. It's almost time to start mowing the lawn.
Spring Lawn Prep
After a long winter, your lawn needs a little TLC. A soil test will help you know what your grass is missing, aeration will help relieve soil compaction, and a simple edger will tame the turf that got out of hand last fall.
A soil test will show you what your grass needs after its dormancy period. Lawn fertilizing is best in fall, but if yours has nutrient deficiencies it might need a spring application.
A simple lawn aerator tool will help loosen compacted turf from heavy snow and foot traffic. Lawn aeration helps let water, air and nutrients get to the roots more effectively.
Keep lawn edges tidy with a simple edging tool. Grass can quickly grow into beds and over sidewalks, but this edger will shape it up in no time.
Spring Lawn Applications
Weeds and grubs can ruin a lush, beautiful lawn seemingly overnight. Gentle assistance in spring will keep problems at bay so you can enjoy your lawn this summer.
Scotts GrubEx grub killer will control grubs for 4 months. Controlling grubs will also keep Japanese beetles from destroying your flowers!
Apply pre-emergent weed control in early spring to keep crabgrass, chickweed, and spurge from taking over your lawn.
This mini broadcast spreader makes it incredibly easy to apply weed and feed to your lawn in spring and can be used to apply ice melt to driveways and walkways in winter!
A little work in the spring means you and your family can enjoy the perfect lawn all summer. And the neighbors will be envious!
